Our study programmes at a glance

We offer more than 15 different study programmes in chemistry, geography, geosciences and biogeosciences. Our study programmes are aimed at both undergraduate and graduate students who have already completed an undergraduate degree: Our Bachelor programmes will offer you a solid basic education in the full range of the respective discipline. Our Master's programmes allow you to specialize according to your interests. Some of these programmes as well as individual courses in many programmes are taught in English. We also offer teacher training programmes from which our students graduate as certified secondary-school teachers with a state examination. Finally, you can pursue your doctorate at our Faculty: You can do it either as an individual research project or within one of the graduate schools and research training groups that our faculty members contribute to.

"Student's paradise": Living and studying in Jena

Student's Paradise: Video about living and studying in Jena

Based on the name of city park and train station, the term "student's paradise" describes the way of life in Jena quite well. Jena is a typical student city. About one-fifth of the entire Jena population are students. The university is not located on a remote campus, but it is spread all across the historical city centre.

Over 100,000 people are living in Jena. Though the city is not very large, it is quite young, vibrant and active: There are numerous bars, pubs, museums, concerts and sports events. And if you would like to relax, the nature is not far. The city is located in the Saale river valley where it is surrounded by steep slopes with white limestone rocks. There are numerous hiking trails and lookout points that invite you to explore the hills and views around Jena.

Furthermore, there is a close network of city, scientific institutions and industry. So, there are not only the Friedrich Schiller University and Jena's second instituion of higher education, the University of Applied Science. There are also several non-university research institutions, including Max Planck, Leibniz and Fraunhofer institutes, as well as high-tech companies, especially in the fields of optics and photonics, bioanalytics and biotechnology, precision engineering, IT and information technology. Students and graduates have many opportunities for internships, jointly supervised theses and starting a professional career.
