Thermodynamics of the Cu, Zn, and Cu-Zn phases: zincolivenite, adamite, olivenite, ludjibaite, strashimirite, and slavkovite
Oxidation zones house many rare minerals, among them particularly many copper arsenates and phosphates. An interesting question is the link between their thermodynamic stability and frequency of their occurrence. Are they rare because they are metastable or because they form as stable phases under very specific conditions? In a new publication, we addressed this question on a number of copper arsenates and phosphates. We have determined their thermodynamic properties and calculate phase diagrams. Doing so, we can confirm that these minerals are rare because they are metastable. There seems to be a link or even a correlation between the two variables considered in this work.
