Recently, Dr. Lindner, Principal Scientist at BASF SE, visited the institute and gave an excellent talk on "Lignin Valorisation in the Chemical Industry." Gaining an industrial perspective on this process was particularly valuable for the scientists involved in the LignUp project and provided a great opportunity to discuss future challenges. Yesterday, Dr. Sudarsanam Putla from the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad visit our institute here in Jena. He is an expert in Biomass and plastic recycling using heterogeneous nanocatalysts. It was a pleasure to have you here.

Today, our dear Henrik successfully defended his Master thesis in which he developed Sodium ion battery full cells based on Hard Carbons and Prussian White. Congratulations Henrik, we wish you all the best for your future in Sweden! You will be missed here in Jena.

Martin was recently invited to give a talk at the RESOLV summer school in Bochum. The session topics of the school were 'Solvation in Charge and Electron Transfer, in Complex Processes and in Biophysics.' Thanks to the Graduate School Solvation Science for the invitation.

Uni Jena triumphs again at the Unibund-Pokal 2025! 🏆 The team claimed victory over Halle and Leipzig — with Martin on the field and our group (the inofficial trainers of the team apparently) cheering from the sidelines. Here are also some impressions from the tournament.

Our postdoc Tilmann visited the National Coal Institute (INCAR-CSIC) in Oviedo/Spain for a status meeting of our joint M-ERA.NET project CoLi-SCo. During the meeting, the partners discussed current results and future directions of our research on Li-S batteries. Tilmann also gave a lecture on the electrochemistry of carbon materials.

Caesar, Merve, Kai and Konstantin represented our group´s research on Solid State Sodium Ion Batteries and Electrocatalysis at the Hannover Messe. It was a lot of fun to show and discuss our technologies with many interested visitors. Martin further displayed the Thuringian ways of energy storage and environmental research conducted here in Jena.

Spring time is conference time, also for us. Here are the hard facts: 4 conferences, 3 countries, 10 oral presentations, 10 poster presentations and one poster prize (won by Zehui Guo). Thanks to the organizing teams of the Deutsche Zeolithtagung 2025 at FAU, HyMat conference in Montpellier, MatSus in Sevilla and Katalytikertagung in Weimar.

Zehui published her first PhD paper in Electrochimica Acta as part of the special issue of the 8th ISEECap 2024.The study systematically investigates the influence of nitrogen functionalities and content in nitrogen-rich carbon materials, specifically carbon/carbon nitride nanohybrids, on their performance as electrode materials in electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) using ionic liquid electrolyte. Leila Abylgazina joins the group as a PostDoc working on the BMBF-funded project WaNaWa (Wasserstoffspeicherung in Nanowasser). The project aims to develop hydrogen storage technology with high working capacity and optimal operating conditions. To achieve this, porous carbons loaded with water are selected as promising materials due to their high surface area, tunable pore size, and reversible adsorption capabilities. Welcome to Jena Leila!

For the next 6 month, Giuseppe Greco visits our group as an exchange PhD student from the University di Salento in Lecce. In his PhD, he works on polymer/carbon hybrids for capacitors under the supervision of Prof. C. Esposito Corcione and Prof. C. Mele. In our group, he will extend his knowledge of carbon materials in this area under the supervision of Tilmann. Welcome, Giuseppe!

Today, we welcomed Rosalba A. Rincón and Sandra González Gallardo, both Wiley-VCH editors in our institute. We enjoyed a great workshop about how to publish with Wiley and are very happy for the many insights the workshop gave us. Thanks for visiting us in Jena!
