Successful block course - towards digital geosciences
3D model of the Ziegenrück Anticline
Graphic: Marko VrabecThis year, we were once again able to secure the participation of Prof. Dr. Marko Vrabec from the University of Ljubljana to offer the popular block course "Multiview Photogrammetry: 3D Virtual Geology for Everyone" as part of the module MGEO005. This was made possible through a teaching assignment.
This course teaches how to use photogrammetry to create digital 3D models of outcrops, geological hand specimens, or any other objects from overlapping photographs. Highly precise terrain models can also be generated using drone photography. This allows outcrops or samples to be documented and measured. Repeated image acquisition enables the monitoring of changes in the terrain, such as those resulting from landslides or erosion. Practical exercises form an important part of the course. This year, we digitized hand specimens from the Erzgebirge, an outcrop in Burgau, the Ziegenrück Anticline, and a scarp near Magdala. Participants also learn about drone operation, flight planning, and the legal aspects of drone use.
