Arriving at the faculty

  • Meeting with the Dean for newly appointed professors

To make your start at our faculty as smooth as possible, we warmly invite you to a personal meeting with the Dean's Office. The purpose of this meeting is to familiarise you with the specific structures and strategic aims of our faculty and to discuss your aspirations in research and teaching.

The Dean’s Office will usually get in touch with you shortly after your appointment to arrange a suitable date. Should you have any urgent questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact us at any time at dekanatchemgeo@uni-jena.de.

  • Mentors for newly appointed professors

The mentoring programme provides targeted support to newly appointed professors during their induction. Experienced professors from within the same institute offer advisory services and consultations to their new colleagues. The aim is to ease the transition into an institution of higher education, pass on institutional knowledge and promote personal and professional development in a trusting environment.

A distinctive feature of the tenure-track procedure is that, upon appointment, two mentors are officially appointed by the faculty council to provide advisory services throughout the process from the very beginning.

TIP: Add the meeting dates directly to your Outlook calendar.
You can find the Faculty Council meeting dates in the calendar of events calendar of events. There, you can use the calendar icon to import the dates directly into your email programme.
Please contact the relevant department head to find out the meeting dates for your department council.

  • Faculty Report

    What is the Faculty Report?

The Faculty Report provides comprehensive information on the faculty’s activities in research, teaching and knowledge transfer.

The Faculty Report is compiled and published every 2–3 years. Its primary purpose is to assist members of the Faculty Advisory Board in preparing for the next advisory board visit to the faculty. The report is also made available to faculty members and partners both within and outside the university.

    How can you get involved?

The Faculty Report offers you a great opportunity to present your research group, your research topics and your other activities to members of the university community and external partners.

The Dean's Office will provide information at the faculty council meetings and via email as soon as a new edition of the report is planned. You will then also receive details on how you can get involved.

Contact person for enquiries regarding the Faculty Report:

  • Inaugral lecture

The faculty regularly organises inaugural lectures: newly appointed professors introduce themselves to the university community and interested parties from outside the university in a formal setting, delivering a specialist lecture that is accessible to a general audience. A member of the Executive Board of the Friedrich Schiller University then presents the letter of appointment. Following the lecture, a reception is usually held, organised by the speaker.

The Dean's Office is responsible for the preparation and organisation of the event, as well as for printing and distributing the invitations.

The Faculty Management will contact you in due course and invite you to deliver your own inaugural lecture.

The websites of the CGF’s institutes and research groups

...are technically hosted on the faculty’s website (with a few exceptions). This ensures a consistent and uniform structure for the online presence of the University and the faculty. (Further information: Website StrategyExternal link).

The respective institutes, research groups and facilities are responsible for the content of their websites.

  • Creating your own website or your research group|working group|study group|task force website

If you would like to create your own website or a website for your research group, we recommend the following procedure:

    • Consult at institute level, i.e. with your institute head or the contact person responsible for the institute’s website
    • Registration for the training session via the Service Desk Portal: This training session is compulsory for anyone wishing to use the University’s Content Management System (CMS)!
    • Once you have completed the training session: The team in the Web Development and Web Services department will create the relevant website and grant you editing rights for this site.
    • You can populate your webpage with engaging content (text, images, videos). Please also remember to maintain the webpage regularly to ensure that the information provided is always up to date.

Further information on using the Content Management System (CMS) and on the training sessionExternal link

  • Staff database, staff directory

Entries in the staff database form the basis for the ‘Contact’ and ‘Staff Directory’ blocks: these blocks allow you to conveniently display the staff members of a structural unit (e.g. your research group) or the contact details of an individual staff member on your website.

All staff members of the faculty can be found in the CGF Staff Directory.

The following applies to CGF staff:

  • Tips for your website

Events calendar and announcements on the faculty website:

If you use the ‘Events’ and/or ‘News’ sections and would like your entries to appear on the faculty website, please use the central pool for events and current news.

Claudia Hilbert, a member of staff in the Dean’s Office, checks this pool several times a week and adds relevant entries to the faculty website as required. This applies to both German-language and English-language entries.

If you do not use these sections but still have, for example, an upcoming event that you would like to publicise, please send an email to claudia.hilbert@uni-jena.de

    Menu structure:

Ensure that your menu navigation and structure are clear and consistent.

Visitors to your website should be able to find what they are looking for very easily – whether they navigate via the main navigation (the three-line menu at the top left), the breadcrumb menu (the small horizontal navigation bar directly below the dark blue bar) or directly via the blocks placed on a page.

You should therefore test your website regularly and systematically with regard to its menu navigation. In other words, check whether individual pieces of content can be found equally easily using the various navigation options.

Explanation of the menu structureExternal link

    Bilingualism:

Where possible, create your website at least in two languages (German/English).

Ensure that German-language content is placed only on the German page and English-language content only on the English page.

This ensures a clear structure and optimises user-friendliness for visitors from different language regions.

    Meaningful links:

When adding links to your website, use short, concise words or phrases that accurately describe where the link leads and what the user can expect to find there. Avoid using the word ‘here’ and long web addresses (URLs).

    Useful tools:

The University offers many useful tools and resources for creating and regularly maintaining your website, for example:

Student recruitment, public relations

  • Programmes offered by the faculty for pupils and schools

    Offers by the faculty

The faculty offers a range of taster sessions for school pupils and school groups.

Regular events include the the "MINT-Festival Jena" (Jena STEM Festival) and the Long Night of Science, which take place alternately every two years. The "Rent-a-Prof(i)" programme and university visits by school classes are organised by the Dean's Office upon request from schools or teachers, tailored to individual requirements.

These initiatives are an important tool for raising awareness among young people of the degree programmes offered by the faculty and, more generally, for inspiring an interest in scientific subjects and the University of Jena.

We would therefore be delighted if you too could get involved in this initiative and, if required, make yourself available, for example, to give a talk to a school class!

    Open Campus

Every spring, the Friedrich Schiller University hosts its Open Campus. This is the main information day for prospective students with information stands run by all faculties and institutes, lectures and much more.

It is important for visitors on the day to have the opportunity to talk to both students and teaching staff. We would therefore be delighted if you could also take part on the day and, for example, be present at your institute’s information stand.

    Contact person

Do you have any questions about the taster sessions? Or do you have an idea for an event for school pupils, prospective students or the public and need support? Please contact:

  • Public Saturday lectures

What are the public Saturday lectures?

Researchers from the faculty present their field of research and their current research projects in lectures written for a general audience.

The target audience is the interested public: (older) school pupils, teachers, university students and staff, professionals from other companies and institutions, and senior citizens.

Subject to the speaker’s consent, the lectures are also recorded and made available as videos on the website.

The public Saturday lectures take place during the winter semester. They are usually in German.

  • Graduation ceremony, alumni portraits

    Alumni portraits

The website features testimonials from some of our former students and PhD candidates. We are always on the lookout for new ‘alumni profiles’: please feel free to draw the attention of your (former) colleagues (PhD candidates, Master’s students, Bachelor’s students) in your research group to this! Anyone interested can simply complete our online questionnaire to create their own portrait.

    Graduation Ceremony

Every year in November, our faculty holds its graduation ceremony: graduates of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, as well as PhD candidates and those completing their habilitation, are given a ceremonial send-off. The doctoral and examination awards are also presented at this event.

The graduation ceremony is an ideal opportunity to celebrate with your students and their families and to engage in conversation. Professors are therefore also very welcome! The Dean’s Office will provide details of the exact date in good time.
